Several Companies are Against New Restrictions on Work Visas
Trump administration suspends issuance of work visas
In a tireless effort to reduce immigration in the US, President Trump decided to ban the issuance of employment-based visas from June 24, 2020 until the end of the year.
The White House’ official proclamation was published on Monday, June 22, 2020.
According to the current administration of the US, this emergency measure will help reduce unemployment in the country by allowing legal citizens to fill available job positions.
However, several critics and immigrant rights advocates say that Trump’s government is using the pandemic and the health crisis as an excuse to meet its immigration agenda planned since 2017.

Several companies criticize new restrictions on work visas
During the last hours, multiple companies, entities and critics around the country have publicly criticized, through social networks, the decision of President Trump to ban the entry of specialized foreign workers.
The complaints come mainly from technology companies like Amazon, Google, Twitter, inter alia. These companies expose the abysmal impact of Trump’s new restrictions.
In fact, the Google chief executive declares that “Immigration has contributed immensely to America’s economic success, making it a global leader in tech, and also Google the company it is today. Disappointed by today’s (22-June) proclamation”.
In addition to that, Amazon declares: “We oppose the Administration’s short-sighted action. Preventing high skilled professionals from entering the country and contributing to America’s economic recovery puts American’s global competitiveness at risk”.
After these public statements, it is evident that the controversy unleashed by the decision to temporarily suspend work visas is going to generate a giant protest in the US.
In light of current circumstances, the last thing the country needs is another social chaos. Instead, the government could readjust certain measures to ease the tension produced by this series of decisions.
Other entities also disagree
Besides the renowned companies that have spoken out against President Trump’s new restrictions, several entities have raised their voices as well.
For instance, the Migration Policy Institute is an entity that analyzes the impact of immigration in the US.
The institute published via Twitter yesterday that “with reports that the Trump administration is barring certain foreign workers in the H1B, H2B, J1 & L1 categories from US entry, we estimate this would keep 219,000 temporary workers out”.
This means that the impact generated by these changes could be very negative for local companies that need foreign workforce to overcome the current crisis and boost the country’s economy.
Why could it be negative for local companies?
It is important to know that a local company can request specialized foreign workers only when local workers are not available or appropriately trained for a specific job position.
This means that foreign workers do not take away job opportunities from legal citizens, but come to the country only when there are not enough local workers available.
Thus, without the required staff, local businesses will not be able to supply the American markets and the local population will feel the shortage.
