Study Analyzes the Role of Immigrants in the US Economy
Ideals of the current government to reduce business immigration
With President Trump leading the nation, the local immigration sector has faced multiple modifications and changes that restructured processes and alternatives available for foreigners to come to the US.
According to the vision of the Trump administration, immigration is positive as long as it is measured, controlled and carefully monitored, but if it is disproportionate and massive, it becomes a burden on the economy, the American population and the government.
Therefore, in recent years, the president and his cabinet have tried to reform the immigration system, increasing restrictions and requirements for legal processes, including humanitarian programs such as political asylum or refuge.
Speaking specifically about business immigration, the Trump administration has substantially limited possibilities for local businesses to hire highly-skilled foreign workers, arguing that American workers should be taken into account before hiring staff from abroad.
However, despite the government’s apparent intention to protect local citizens, dozens of studies conducted recently contradict the premises of the current administration and state that reducing business immigration will have negative and irreversible repercussions for the US economy.

Study shows the impact of immigration on the economy
The Migration Policy Institute (MPI) is a nonpartisan organization that analyzes and researches the impact of immigration policies and proposes strategies to improve the local immigration system.
Recently, the MPI released a study called “Navigating the Future of Work: The Role of Immigrant-Origin Workers in the Changing U.S. Economy”. This study delves into the impact and role of foreign workers on the progress, development and behavior of the country’s economy.
The MPI research takes into account both immigrants and their children born in the US. The results of the study reveal that:
- Between 2010 and 2018, immigrants represent 83% of the country’s workforce growth. Quite a high number.
- Among local workers, immigrants represented 28% in 2018.
- Growth in both the working-age population and the labor force will come from immigrants until 2035, the study projects.
Adding to that, the study looks at the impact of the pandemic, restrictions on business immigration and prominent changes in different sectors of the US market.
Thus, the MPI concludes that “Amid declining U.S. birth rates and the aging of the population, immigrant-origin workers will play a critical role in the future of the U.S. (…) as the economy recovers (from the pandemic), training for immigrant-origin and other U.S. workers and policies that select immigrants with the skills to fill the jobs of the future will be essential to the country’s economic vitality.”
