Survey: Public Support for Immigration Growing
Immigration policies do not align with public interest
Although the American public’s opinion has shifted favorably on immigration, few changes have been made in the legislative arena as none of the proposals put forth by Democratic leaders have passed.

The immigration reform Democrats failed to enact
Democratic leaders have proposed several substantial changes to favor immigration. However, none of these proposals have been implemented. Among the main projects formulated are:
- Include, through the reconciliation process, immigration language within the current government spending bill. This project, which sought to benefit undocumented workers who have been in the country for more than a decade, granting them parole status to remain legally for up to 10 years, was recently stopped by the Senate Parliamentarian, who considered this proposal unfeasible.
- The repeal of the “Remain in Mexico” policy, which establishes that migrants seeking political asylum must wait for a response outside the US. This measure, although for many immigrant rights advocates it represents a prolonged risk for the victims making the request, has been reaffirmed twice by federal courts, including a Court of Appeals, which is why it continues to be implemented despite the Biden administration’s attempt to eradicate it.

The American public supports immigration, survey finds
In several surveys such as the American Values Survey and other national polls conducted in 2021, there is evidence of a favorable trend in American opinion regarding immigration, considering that:
- In one of the surveys that included Democratic, Republican and Independent citizens, “a plurality of 41 percent of Americans says illegal immigrants currently working in the United States should be allowed to stay in their jobs and apply for US citizenship“.
- With respect to the values of immigrants as residents of the US, a large bipartisan majority view them as hardworking people with strong family values.
It should be noted that this figure does not represent a generalized opinion since, although a limited percentage of Republicans polled gave their opinion in favor, current figures still represent an increase in favorable opinion of immigration compared to polls conducted in previous years.

The opposition among voter opinion
It is clear that the tendency of Democratic voters to support immigration reform is not reflected in legislative changes, as so far no substantial change has been generated and the options to create a considerable transformation in immigration laws are reduced considering the end of the fiscal year and the approaching mid-term election that may put the Democratic party at a disadvantage.
However, Democratic respondents, who represented the majority in the presidential election, are asking their party’s representatives to expand legal strategies to make immigration proposals possible.
