Take Advantage of Current Fees to Submit an Immigration Application
The USCIS downturn in revenue
The US Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) is the entity in charge of receiving, reviewing, and responding to immigration applications in the country.
It means that this agency evaluates visa applications, both immigrant and non-immigrant, as well as applications for political asylum and refuge, applications for legal permanent residence, inter alia.
This federal agency receives revenue primarily from fees that applicants must pay when submitting an immigration request.
Due to the arrival of the global pandemic, the Trump administration decided to close the borders and temporarily ban the entry of immigrants. This caused the USCIS to have an almost devastating downturn in revenue, forcing the agency to:
- Request monetary aid from Congress, for a total of $1.2 million.
- Possibly furlough nearly 70% of its employees around the country (if Congress does not provide the monetary aid to bail out the immigration agency).
- Increase application fees.
Thus, the USCIS is acting swiftly to protect employee wages and to continue with day-to-day immigration duties.
The USCIS announces increase in application fees
Through an official statement, the USCIS announced that the fees for most immigration applications will increase as of October 2, 2020.
This includes, but is not limited to:
- Naturalization Ceremonies.
- Asylum applications.
Hence, the US is now one of only four countries in the world that charge for political asylum requests. - Application to change or extend non-immigrant status.
- Provisional unlawful presence waiver.
- Application for Employment Authorization.
As a result, most immigration application fees increased, some more than others.
Take advantage of current rates
This is the right time for you to start your immigration journey in the US for multiple reasons:
- Immigration processes are gradually returning to normal.
- The USCIS has not increased fees yet, so you can take advantage of current fees and submit your immigration application as soon as possible.
- The USCIS has not yet furlough a portion of its employees, therefore, the current pace of immigration processes is normal and you could obtain a satisfactory response in less time.
Therefore, it is essential for you to start organizing your immigration application and take advantage of current fees before the increase.
