Texas Attorney General Files Lawsuit to Reinstate MPP
Biden rescinded the MPP policy
For the past four years, former President Trump tried to reduce immigration at all costs, both legal and illegal, arguing that the massive influx of foreigners becomes an unnecessary burden on the economy and the federal government. Therefore, many of his policies also affected the most vulnerable immigrant populations, including people who urgently need international protection to flee persecution, violence and other risky situations.
To give a specific example, in 2019, the US and Mexico signed an agreement called MPP (Migrant Protection Protocols), also known as “Remain in Mexico”. Broadly speaking, this policy states that asylum seekers who arrive at the US’ borders through Mexico cannot enter the country, but must remain in Mexican territory until they receive a response to their immigration applications, which can take several months or more than a year.
The MPP policy forced thousands of asylum seekers to remain in Mexico in truly precarious situations, without constant access to food, often without basic services, at the mercy of local gangs and natural disasters, and without legal representation.
Fortunately for asylum seekers and other vulnerable communities, the Biden administration disagrees with these kinds of border restrictions. Therefore, during his first weeks in office, President Biden removed the MPP policy by suspending new enrollment in this program and unveiled a resettlement plan, which has allowed hundreds of asylum seekers to enter the US during the past few weeks.
Texas Attorney General asks Biden to reinstate the “Remain in Mexico” policy
Naturally, not all members of the government approve of Biden’s decisions about the local immigration system. In fact, every administration must always face opposition groups and a part of the population that does not agree with its ideals, especially when it comes to a sector as controversial as immigration.
For instance, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton disagrees with Biden’s plans and has already filed three lawsuits against the current president’s immigration policies.
Paxton filed the third lawsuit on Tuesday, April 13, 2021, arguing that the way in which Biden removed the MPP policy violates local law and that, to protect the American population and the border territory, it is imperative to re-implement this program and ban asylum seekers from entering the US during their immigration process.
In the lawsuit, which is also supported by the Missouri Attorney General, the Texas Attorney General openly states, “This lawsuit challenges the Administration’s unexplained and inexplicable two-sentence statement functionally ending the MPP. The result of this arbitrary and capricious decision has been a huge surge of Central American migrants.”
