The American Election Eve Poll and Immigration

The importance of immigration in the presidential elections

The immigration sector has always been very controversial, mainly because the US is the destination for thousands of immigrants annually. On the one hand, there is a part of the population that supports immigration and assures that it is beneficial for the economy. On the other hand, there is a part of the population that does not support immigration and assures that it is detrimental to American workers.

Normally, immigration always plays a major role during the US presidential election. However, the local population must pay attention to immigration now more than ever, mainly because the Trump administration implemented multiple policies over the past few years, substantially changing and transforming the immigration system by increasing restrictions and requirements for foreigners to apply for an entry or legal residence permit.

Adding to that, President Trump’s stance when it comes to illegal immigration has also increased social controversy. In fact, multiple policies of the Trump administration have led to the separation of immigrant families at the borders, express deportations amid an unprecedented global health emergency, and the isolation of asylum seekers, drawing the attention of hundreds of activists, immigrant rights advocates and immigration attorneys.

Results of the American Election Eve Poll on immigration

The American Election Eve Poll is carried out every four years and aims to analyze the opinion of different voting communities about important sectors of society, as well as proposals of presidential candidates.

Communities included in the 2020 poll are:

  • Latinos.
  • Black.
  • Asian / Asian-American and Pacific Islanders (AAPI).
  • American Indian.
  • White.

According to the survey’s results, among these communities, issues that require the most attention from presidential nominees are:

  • Global Coronavirus pandemic.
  • Employment, unemployment rate and economy.
  • Health care costs.
  • Discrimination and racial justice.

However, there are also other issues of public interest that are extremely important but which, in light of the health crisis, were not the main focus during these presidential elections. That is the case of immigration, an extremely sensitive and controversial issue.

What is the opinion of respondents regarding immigration?

The poll included a question about immigration policies that gave respondents the opportunity to choose between:

  1. “Our immigration policy should focus on enforcement and border security first, including deporting those here illegally, cracking down on abuse of our asylum laws, and finishing the border wall.”
This option is related to proposals of the current president of the US, Donald Trump.
  2. “Our immigration policy should focus on creating a humane system that is fair to all, including stopping the separation of children from their parents, establishing a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants who work and live here, and creating new laws to ensure there is a fair process for people to legally enter the country.”
This option is related to proposals of the Democratic nominee Joe Bien, who won the election and will be the 46th president of the US.

According to answers from the communities mentioned above, between 68% and 82% of voters support option number 2. However, in the White community, 44% of voters support option 1 and 55% of voters support option number 2.

Therefore, it means that most respondents support an inclusive immigration system, which encourages legal immigration and respects human rights above any political ideal.
