The American Population Supports Legalization for Dreamers
Dreamers – A Community in Limbo
There is a well-known immigrant community in the US called Dreamers. This term refers to young immigrants who came, or were brought, to the country without legal documentation when they were minors.
The vast majority of Dreamers have lived in the US for as long as they can remember and know almost nothing about their countries of origin. However, although Dreamers are essentially a pillar of the American socio-cultural fabric, they have no guarantees for their future because they entered the country without prior authorization, even if they were children.
The only direct option for them is a deportation relief program called DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals), which temporarily protects them, but which has also been embroiled in a never-ending political battle since its implementation in 2012.

American citizens support a path to citizenship for Dreamers
Former President Trump’s administration tried to eradicate DACA by any means possible. In fact, the controversy was so great that it reached the US Supreme Court, which, in late June 2020, ruled in favor of DACA.
Prior to the Supreme Court’s verdict, the Pew Research Center conducted a survey between June 4-10, 2020, which included 9,654 American adults. This survey revealed that:
- 74% of respondents support providing a path to citizenship for Dreamers.
- 91% of Democratic respondents and 54% of Republican respondents support a path to citizenship for Dreamers, a high figure compared to other issues related to the immigration sector.
- Only 24% of respondents are against a path to citizenship for Dreamers.

Why has there still been no action by Congress?
According to a recent report by The Hill, the real question should be, if the American population has been open to the idea of legalizing hundreds of thousands of Dreamers, why hasn’t Congress acted on it?
At this point it is important to explain that, even after the Supreme Court’s verdict, DACA entered another legal process and a federal judge in Texas ruled against this program in mid-July 2021, suspending new applications and again leaving thousands of Dreamers in limbo.
Therefore, this could be the right time for the Biden administration, along with Congress, to enact a legislation and offer permanent protection for Dreamers, who belong to a community essential to the national economy.
Several experts have explained that this is not about protecting and saving DACA, because it remains a temporary benefit, but about recognizing the innate presence of Dreamers throughout the country’s history.
