The American Population’s Opinion on Foreign Students
What do the local population think about international students?
A recent study sponsored by ACE (American Council on Education) analyzes the results of the same survey carried out in March 2017, December 2019 and February 2021, which is mainly focused on knowing the opinion of the American population regarding foreign students, their impact on the education sector and the economy, and their intellectual and cultural contribution.
Overall, the American public has a positive outlook when it comes to international students and recognizes their “academic, cultural, scientific, and economic contributions as vital members of their communities”. Nevertheless, at the same time, there is also concern among the local population related to the idea that foreign students take away opportunities from American students and a possible threat to national security.
Let’s look at some important findings:
- In the 2021 survey, 55% of respondents agree that the US should increase its efforts to attract foreign students. This represents 5% more compared to 2017 results.
- 68% of respondents state that American students benefit from the presence of international students.
- 55% of those surveyed think that “it is in America’s interest to be the top destination of university students from other countries” to strengthen the economy.
- Only 18% of respondents think visa processes should be simpler, while 44% think they should remain as they are now.
It is worth mentioning that these findings came to light at the right time, after new foreign student enrollment in US institutions decreased by 43% in 2020 amid the global Coronavirus pandemic, tremendously affecting the education sector and reducing the country’s ability to overcome the current juncture.

Immigration has always created controversy
Since the US has always had a fairly high flow of immigrants, it is a sector that generates controversy and different opinions among the local population. There are citizens and administrations that support immigration and the expansion of existing legal processes, while there are citizens and administrations that propose to reduce immigration levels.
However, approaching the immigration sector from a general perspective could be a mistake because the US immigration system is quite broad and has multiple branches, which create different impacts on the economy, society and the cultural fabric.
Therefore, it is important to know the opinion of the American population in detail when it comes to the immigration sector, that is, to understand what are the views of local citizens regarding immigration based on employment or study, immigration based on family ties, immigration related to humanitarian programs and irregular immigration.
The reason why it is essential to create research structures to understand the opinion of local communities is because, to give an example, the impact of highly skilled foreign workers on the economy differs from that of asylum seekers or refugees, as least initially. Therefore, it is also important to take these factors into account and analyze whether the local population really knows about immigration and its impact on the nation’s socioeconomic growth and development.
