The Biden Administration Streamlines Immigrant Minor Processes
Border entities are transferring minors on time
Alejandro Mayorkas, Secretary of DHS (Department of Homeland Security), recently stated that the Biden administration has made considerable progress regarding immigrant minors apprehended at the borders unaccompanied and the processing of these cases at HHS (Department of Health and Human Services) facilities.
In March 2021, the border situation unleashed colossal social controversy due to a surge of illegal crossings. At the time, the Biden administration did not have enough resources to house a growing number of unaccompanied immigrant minors, but at the same time, it did not plan to deport them amid the global health crisis.
Therefore, what happened was that border entities were not being able to transfer minors to HHS centers in less than 72 hours, which is the regular protocol established by local law. In fact, at the end of March, there were more than 5,700 immigrant children in Border Patrol stations or other CBP (Customs and Border Protection) facilities, which do not have adequate conditions to house minors.
Mayorkas stated that, thanks to the Biden administration’s timely reaction, border forces are transferring unaccompanied minors to HHS facilities in approximately 20 hours, a significant achievement for the current president and his team. For instance, during the first weekend of May, CBP had only 677 children in its custody.
The fact that the border situation has improved considerably in just 4 weeks means that the immigration system is also gradually returning to normal. Thus, it is the right time to start your immigration process. Contact Motion Law Immigration and follow the advice of our experienced attorneys!
Biden faced challenges due to unaccompanied immigrant minors
Immigration was paused around the world for a considerable period of time due to the global Coronavirus pandemic, which spread massively and stopped international transit almost completely. Speaking specifically about the US, aside from the health crisis, former President Trump and his team also tried to substantially restrict immigration over the past four years through all kinds of policies, measures, rules and limitations.
Therefore, when the American population elected Democratic nominee Joe Biden as the nation’s 46th president in November 2020, dozens of experts predicted that his administration would have to face a stressful border situation due to Trump’s actions on the immigration sector and the aftermath and repercussions of the health emergency in vulnerable territories such as Central America.
The current administration of the US has faced daunting challenges due to the surge of illegal border crossings that has taken place since February 2021, just a couple of weeks after President Biden took office. It is important to clarify that the controversy is closely related to immigrant minors who arrive at the borders unaccompanied.
In fact, border forces encountered 18,890 unaccompanied minors in April, a rather alarming number, and processing at Border Patrol stations stalled because HHS facilities no longer had enough space to house more minors. However, the situation is improving by leaps and bounds.
