The Border Situation Might Drive Immigration Reform
Highest apprehension rate in two decades
The US is currently experiencing a surge of illegal border crossings that has taken place since late 2020, but intensified after President Biden took office in late January 2021. The situation has been alarming and controversial among the American public, especially because border encounter numbers have already reached quite high levels compared to recent years.
In fact, CBP (Customs and Border Protection) reported that:
- In March 2021, border forces apprehended 172,331 undocumented immigrants, including single adults, family units, and unaccompanied minors. This is the highest monthly figure in 15 years.
- In April 2021, border forces apprehended 178,622 undocumented immigrants, which is not a substantial increase compared to previous estimates, but it is the highest monthly figure in 20 years.
Unsurprisingly, the Biden administration has faced a wave of criticism as opposition groups blame it for current irregular migration levels. However, several experts and researchers have recently stated that there are many other influencing factors that increase mass migration, which are not related to local policies or the new administration’s ideals.

The border situation might be an advantage for the Biden administration
It is understandable and quite normal that the border situation creates uncertainty among the American public, especially since the health risk caused by the global Coronavirus pandemic is still present and because the country is recovering from the economic downturn brought by the sanitary crisis.
However, although the situation may seem alarming and even threatening, it could be an advantage and a tool for the Biden administration to carry out its immigration plans. To explain this premise, it is first important to clarify that the Biden administration plans to expand certain immigration programs to strengthen the economy with the help of foreign workforce, without neglecting American workers or the well-being of the local population in general.
Now that irregular migration figures are drawing the attention of the Biden administration and the American public, it is highly likely that not only the general aspects of the situation will come to light, but also the root causes and circumstances that force a thousands of people to flee their countries and risk their integrity to enter the US.
Having said that, it is also important to clarify that, according to the testimony of dozens of undocumented foreigners, immigration processes can be quite difficult and even complex if they do not have the constant accompaniment of experts. Therefore, one of the Biden administration’s proposals is to reduce irregular migration by simplifying the legal immigration system.
In fact, that might be the solution for the US to reform the entire immigration system and effectively monitor immigration levels. Regarding this topic, you might also be interested: Leaving Legal Immigration Behind Could Hurt the Economy.
