The Government Complains about Immigrants Holding Dual Citizenship
Borders closure during the global pandemic
The current government of the US decided to close the borders while the peak of COVID-19 contagion decreases in its territories.
This means that the country is not currently receiving immigrants and there is no possibility to request asylum or refuge.
However, people with legal citizenship have the right to enter the country at any time and to use the public resources offered by the government during the current situation.
The government is concerned about dual citizenship
Millions of immigrants from Mexico obtained permanent legal residence or citizenship in the US in recent years.
The fear of several government officials is that dual citizenship holders will attempt to return to the US when the massive outbreak occurs in Mexico.
They fear that the virus might be imported from Central American territories and claim that the local health system cannot handle more people infected with Coronavirus.
However, the current administration has expressed no intention to deny entry to legal citizens.
The only thing the President ordered was to suspend the entry of undocumented immigrants to the country for at least 60 days to protect the local population, especially the health workers and the medical assistance system.
Government officials are asking President Trump to take extreme measures to prevent the virus from entering the southern borders from Mexico through immigrants with dual citizenship.
The figures show that approximately 1.5 million legal citizens live in Mexico and if the situation of the pandemic worsens in the Central American country, they will want to return to the US, according to the senior leaders.
The fear of dual citizenship holders returning to the United States is based on three main premises:
- The possibility of the US will developing a vaccine or a cure for the COVID-19 and thus, citizens abroad decide to return to protect their health.
- The US stabilizing the local economy and Mexico having a financial crisis.
- The possibility that the COVID-19 contagion curve decreases rapidly in the US but the positive cases increase in Mexico.
The government has yet to answer this concerns, however, legal citizens have the right to return to the US anytime according to the Political Constitution.
Immigrant rights advocates brand the government as ironic
Immigrant rights advocates claim that the government cannot to suspend the entry of legal citizens into the country after stopping most immigration processes.
In addition to that, they declare that the US is mercilessly deporting immigrants to more vulnerable countries with fewer resources, “exporting the virus” and now the government does not want to receive citizens for fear of “importing the virus.”
