A general background of what the MPP is

This regulation also allows federal agents to expel asylum seekers who are already within the US. After removal, asylum seekers are taken to Mexico where they wait in temporary shelters.

Attempts to revoke the MPP
The MPP went into effect in 2019, however, the Biden administration has attempted to overturn it twice:
- In the first attempt, Biden decided to restrict the measure and unveil a resettlement plan for asylum seekers who met certain requirements to progressively enter the US. However, in August 2021, a Federal Judge ordered the reimplementation of the MPP.
- The second time around, the Biden administration released a memorandum in October to rescind the MPP again. However, in December, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled against the termination of this measure.

The many risks that immigrants face at the Mexican border
Several immigrant rights advocates openly state that this measure undermines the integrity of people who are fleeing precarious situations in their countries of origin and who face additional risks while waiting for a response to their asylum claims.
On the other hand, several people attempting to cross the border from Mexico into the US irregularly have given their testimonies about the great risks they face by not following regular protocols.
