The Number of Immigrants Detained at the Borders Increases
Wave of immigrants on the southern borders of the US
The Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is one of the branches of the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and is one of the entities in charge of supervising the movement at the borders and review the processes of immigrants who arrive at the borders or try to cross them illegally.
Apart from that, the CPB publishes official figures on the number of immigrants detained at the borders every fiscal year (October-September).
The trend of illegal immigration from Central America to the US decreased considerably with the arrival of the pandemic. When the North American territory began to feel the massive outbreak of Coronavirus, the number of immigrants arriving at the borders decreased compared to the first months of the year.
The figures from the past few months have been very helpful for the current administration, because since President Trump took office in 2017, he has focused on reducing illegal immigration and increasing border control.
However, after the decline in illegal immigration, official CBP figures show that the number of immigrants detained at the country’s southern borders increased by 40% in June.
The official figures
According to CBP’s official website, the fiscal year 2020 figures show that:
- In April, 16,045 immigrants were detained. In May, that number increased to 21,498, while in June they almost doubled, with a total of 30,300 detained immigrants.
- 697 unaccompanied minors were detained in april, while in June that number increased to 1,564.
In addition to that, due to current border restrictions, immigrants who arrived at the borders on their own to request political asylum or refuge in recent months, were returned to Mexico.
This figure also increased considerably:
- 924 immigrants were considered inadmissible during April, but that number increased in June to 2,212.
- This also includes unaccompanied minors. During April, 29 minors were considered inadmissible in the US, while in June that number increased to 87.
Thus, despite President Trump’s attempt to implement emergency measures to restrict the massive entry of foreigners into the country, illegal immigration is taking flight again after the Coronavirus outbreak in the US.
Express deportations
Due to the public health threat generated by the global pandemic, express deportations are allowed during the health crisis.
Thus, official CBP figures also show that almost 90% of detained immigrants were returned to Mexico almost immediately.
This procedure is allowed during the Coronavirus outbreak to prevent immigration detention centers around the country from becoming even more overcrowded.
This emergency measure has generated a lot of controversy among immigrant rights advocacy organizations because, in their opinion, the Trump government may be exporting the virus to less favored countries.
The future of illegal immigration
There is a possibility that illegal immigration will continue to increase in the coming months for several reasons:
- Latin America is entering the peak of Coronavirus infections. Thus, thousands of families will try to cross borders to protect their health. In fact, a massive Caravan with more than 1,000 people started a journey from Honduras to the US a couple of weeks ago.
- The restrictions on the immigration processes of the US have increased considerably during the last weeks, therefore, the waiting times are longer now. This could cause thousands of immigrants to attempt to cross borders without legal documentation.
