The Supreme Court Protects California “Sanctuary” Laws
The Trump administration against Sanctuary Cities
One of the strongest focuses of the Donald Trump campaign has been to reduce illegal immigration (especially from Central America) and take legal action with undocumented immigrants currently living in the US.
President Trump considers that immigrants who cross the borders illegally (including minors) should not have the possibility to obtain legal residence or citizenship in the country since doing so is against the law and therefore should be punished with deportation.
However, the US is a multicultural country and has many communities that try to protect the human rights of all residents of the country, including undocumented immigrants who deserve a chance like any legal citizen.
That’s why since Donald Trump assumed the presidency of the US in 2017, there has been an endless battle between immigrant rights advocates, immigrant communities, critics, sanctuary cities, and the current government.
This controversy has been so great, that President Trump decided to take some of his petitions regarding immigration to the US Supreme Court of Justice, however, the Court ruled in favor of the sanctuary cities last Monday.
Sanctuary Cities – Brief Explanation
Sanctuary cities are known around the world because they have local laws that protect the rights of undocumented immigrants.
In the US, there are dozens of these cities around the country and they have managed to hold fast to their ideals despite the current government’s insistence on overthrowing most of their laws.
In fact, President Trump has repeatedly tried to send his border forces and specialized agents from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE) to sanctuary cities to capture undocumented immigrants or obtain their personal information from local entities.
This has generated much controversy in the country because sanctuary cities have not allowed border forces to enter to their territory and disturb their population.
For instance, the fight between the laws of California (Governor Gavin Newsom- belonging to the Democratic political party) and the government of Donald Trump (belonging to the Republican political party) has been constant in recent years.
Because of this, the Governor of California officially communicated a couple of weeks ago that no entity, either public or private, has the right to share personal information of undocumented immigrants to any border force and if someone does, (s)he could be convicted of a crime and go to the jail.

The case that Trump brought to the Supreme Court of Justice
Because the state of California has established “Sanctuary” laws and protects the information and rights of immigrants (both documented and undocumented), the Trump government decided to ask the Supreme Court to remove some of the laws that protect this population.
The current administration of the US wants California’s laws that protect against deportation to change in order to initiate proceedings with undocumented immigrants living illegally in this state.

The Supreme Court’s response
The United States Supreme Court of Justice ruled in favor of the state of California and its “Sanctuary” laws, arguing that all the states of the country have the freedom, power and right to protect the most vulnerable communities.
Therefore, the Trump government did not achieve what it wanted by taking the case to the Supreme Court and the state of California will continue its intention to protect the human rights of the entire population residing there.
The California Governor argues that undocumented immigrants are the state’s primary workforce and deserve protection, help, and opportunities to present their immigration cases to the US Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS).
On top of that, Governor Newsom says the reason why there is so much illegal immigration in the US is because of the strict regulations of the Trump government that should be reconsidered.
