The US and Guatemala Discuss about Irregular Immigration
Secretary of State discusses with Guatemala about illegal immigration
On Thursday, February 17, 2021, the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, discussed about irregular immigration with Pedro Brolo, the Guatemalan Foreign Minister. During the conversation, Blinken emphasized the commitment of the US to curb and control illegal immigration looking at the root causes to avoid the implementation of restrictive and strict policies, which could affect immigrant populations in need of international assistance.
In order to assertively manage and solve underlying problems that force Central American citizens to migrate to the US without following guidelines established by the local immigration system, Blinken and Brolo stated that the governments of the region must commit and focus on improving the quality of life in vulnerable Central American territories, addressing situations such as:
- Lack of employment opportunities and economic stability.
- Endemic impunity.
- Corruption.
- Social insecurity.
- Civil war and violence.
To achieve this goal, Blinken proposes to:
- Create strategies to eradicate corruption in vulnerable territories.
- Promote respect for human rights among local populations.
- Apply government democracy to make decisions that benefit the entire population of the American continent.
Adding to that, Blinken stated that the goal is to make Guatemala a safe country for local communities and thus be able to reduce illegal immigration from this territory.

Biden’s plans to improve the immigration system
Immigration was an essential issue during the most recent presidential elections in the US, despite the fact that the global health crisis, the health care system and the economy received constant attention from the American population and the strongest candidates.
The reason why immigration played an important role during the November 2020 elections is because the two strongest candidates (former President Donald Trump and current President Joe Biden) differ almost completely in their position regarding this sector.
The Democratic nominee took the victory and plans to promote comprehensive immigration reform to help the most vulnerable immigrant communities, allow highly-skilled foreign workers to enter the country more easily, and provide a path to citizenship for millions of undocumented immigrants, who are also essential workers in times of crisis.
In less than a month, the Biden administration has already revoked multiple restrictive policies on the immigration system, which were implemented by the Trump administration.
Immigration law enforcement is important as well
Although President Biden has delivered on his promises regarding lifting Trump’s restrictions on immigration, his administration has also received multiple criticism for the lack of proposals regarding immigration enforcement both at the borders and within the US.
One of the most important aspects of immigration enforcement is how the federal government approaches irregular immigration, including operations to detain undocumented immigrants and deportation proceedings.
Therefore, the fact that the Secretary of State has commented on strategies to curb illegal immigration from Guatemala shows that the Biden government is also aware of the need to propose alternatives to avoid an immigration crisis.
