The US Borders Could Remain Closed Indefinitely
The arrival of the pandemic in the US
Since the massive outbreak of Coronavirus in North American territories, the President of the US, Donald Trump, decided to close the borders to mitigate the impact of the virus.
This decision was made following the recommendation of the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The CDC team of health professionals recommended closing the borders for at least 30 days to protect local public health.
Therefore, some immigration processes offered by the US Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) are not currently active.
Let’s review some of them:
- Applications for asylum or refuge in the US are temporarily suspended, except in some emergency cases.
- No immigrant can currently enter the country.
- There are no tourist trips available in the US.
- Immigrants who currently reach the borders are deported almost immediately.
- USCIS offices are closed.
- On-site services such as hearings, naturalization ceremonies and biometric data updates have been postponed due to the health crisis as well.
The US government declared in late March that these measures would apply for a maximum of 60 days.
However, the government has not said anything recently about the borders’ closure. The President has shown no intention of allowing immigrants to enter the country again.
The only official statement is that USCIS reopens its offices and resumes face-to-face services as of June 4, 2020.
Due to this lack of open communication, the current government is receiving accusations about the borders’ closure.
Immigrant Rights Advocates’ opinion
According to the opinion of thousands of immigrant rights advocates around the country, President Trump and his immigration agenda architect, Stephen Miller, want to keep the borders closed indefinitely.
The advocates claim that all immigrants fleeing danger have the right to obtain international protection from the US.
On top of that, they mention that it seems as if everything is a plan for the upcoming presidential elections in late 2020.
It is well known that President Trump has always been against immigration, arguing that it negatively impacts all economic areas of the country.
Thus, what immigrant rights advocates argue is that the current government is using the health crisis as an excuse to prevent potential voters from joining the opposition.
This is a very delicate conjecture and there is not enough truthful evidence to indicate that this is true.
However, it is indeed important for the current government to analyze the possibility of opening the borders to allow applications for asylum and refuge again.
How can this time be used wisely?
Borders cannot remain closed for a long time according to the US Constitution.
Therefore, what the current administration declares is that they will resume all services at the borders when the threat of the virus diminishes.
