The US Continues to Export COVID-19 to Guatemala
Deportations are common amid the global pandemic
Since the arrival of the Coronavirus in the US, the Trump administration has announced several changes in deportation policies.
In fact, express deportations, exempted from protocols established by the law, are accepted during the health crisis caused by the COVID-19.
The Trump administration presents several theories regarding the benefits of express deportations during the pandemic.
Some of the main arguments as to why express deportations are necessary are:
- They prevent possible saturation in the immigration system and processes.
- Prevent Immigration Detention Centers around the country from becoming overcrowded.
- They prevent thousands of immigrants from entering the US and using the substantial resources necessary to overcome the health crisis.
- Prevent the health system from weakening and becoming saturated.
- They prevent immigrants from using social benefits that should be offered only to the local population during the current juncture.
Therefore, the current administration of the US supports express deportations in the midst of the health crisis caused by the Coronavirus.
This has generated incessant debate between the Trump administration and immigrant rights advocacy organizations.
Express deportations to Guatemala
Guatemala is one of the Central American countries that receives a large number of immigrants deported from the US.
During the health crisis, Guatemala has suffered the consequences of importing the virus through the flights with deportees from the US.
In fact, the Guatemalan government asked the Trump government to suspend deportations for more than a month and they resumed on June 9, 2020.
One of the conditions to resume deportations to Guatemala was that the US should send the medical certificates of each deported immigrant, showing that they are not infected of Coronavirus.
However, it has only been 15 days since deportations resumed and there are already more than 20 immigrants deported from the US who tested positive for the nouvelle Coronavirus.
This means that Trump’s government is breaking the promise of implementing strict health protocols before deporting immigrants to Guatemala.

The danger of express deportations
There are multiple reasons why Guatemala asked the US government to adjust deportation protocols.
For instance:
- The infrastructure of the medical sector is not prepared to save as many lives as possible in the event of a massive outbreak of Coronavirus.
- Guatemala does not have enough medical personnel.
- The local resources of this Central American country are limited and should be used cautiously.
- There are not enough medical supplies to protect deported immigrants infected with Coronavirus.
Therefore, the US government must analyze the situation before continuing to deport excessively since it could generate results diametrically opposite to those expected.
For example, one of the repercussions that this could cause is that when the situation improves in the US but worsens in Guatemala, mass migration is going to be an altercation for the North American territory.
