The US Halts Deportation of Women Involved in Medical Scandal

DOJ halts deportations of women involved in medical scandal

Medical scandal at Georgia immigration detention center

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is the federal entity in charge of overseeing immigration detention centers around the US, where undocumented foreigners go while their deportation processes are completed or until they receive a response to their immigration applications.

ICE is now more powerful than ever under the Trump administration, which has always wanted to reduce immigration. As a result, immigration detention centers are typically overcrowded and conditions are not always optimal for detainees.

Due to the nature of its work and pressure from the Trump administration to meet its immigration goals, ICE has been involved in multiple controversies and legal processes in recent years.

For instance, a nurse, who used to work at the Irwin County immigration detention center, in Georgia, filed an internal complaint in September 2020, stating that the gynecologist in charge of assisting women detained there was performing hysterectomies (uterus removal) without consent and without previous symptoms.

It means that women involved in this medical scandal did not need this type of procedure, which makes it impossible for them to have children in the future.

Naturally, this caught the attention of dozens of activists and immigrant rights advocates, who called for immediate intervention and explanation about these irreversible procedures.

ICE tried to deport women involved in medical scandal

Dozens of immigrant women were willing to give their testimonies about gynecological procedures performed at this Georgia immigrant detention center.

However, ICE was trying to deport key witnesses in the ongoing investigations, which caught the attention of immigration attorneys, who called on the Trump administration to halt the deportations until they could give their testimonies and complete the investigations.

Activists involved in the case also state that they have evidence of what was really happening in the detention center and hysterectomies performed improperly and unnecessarily. Therefore, they should not face deportation proceedings in the middle of investigations.

DOJ halts deportations of women involved in medical scandal

On Tuesday, November 24, 2020, the Trump administration, through the Department of Justice (DOJ), stated that immigrant women involved in the Georgia detention center medical scandal may not be deported and will be protected until at least January 21, 2021, when President-elect Joe Biden takes office.

This decision will definitely help to complete ongoing investigations and to implement measures to avoid such situations among immigrant communities in ICE detention centers.

An immigration attorney involved in the case stated: “This is an acknowledgement by the federal government that it is critically important that these women have a meaningful opportunity to participate in the federal investigation related to medical atrocities at Irwin.”
