The US helps El Salvador during the pandemic
Trump’s government offers monetary aid to El Salvador
Trump’s administration decided to help El Salvador during the Coronavirus crisis because they are still receiving deportees from the US.
The current government has received multiple negative criticisms for the way they reacted to the COVID-19 pandemic.
One of the most controversial issues is immigration and deportations during the health crisis.
The emergency measure that the US implemented is to prevent any immigrant from entering the country, at least temporarily. Therefore, all immigrants who reach the borders are deported in less than 90 minutes and cannot enter US territory.
Therefore, the President closed all the country’s borders to prevent the massive spread of the virus.
Where do the deportees go?
People deported from the US are normally sent to Guatemala, El Salvador, or Mexico.
However, several Central American countries have refused to receive deportees who are not local citizens because it is a risk to the public health of their populations.
The countries of Central America are trying to make the best decisions to maintain balance within their territories. However, most countries do not have the necessary medical supplies to contain a high peak of infection.
El Salvador’s responses
The government of El Salvador decided to continue receiving deportees from the US with strict hygiene measures in both countries.
The US is testing the temperature of every immigrant before deporting them, and El Salvador has fumigation sessions at airports and on planes that transport the deportees.
In this way, both countries help each other and protect their population from possible massive contagion.
The US’ response to El Salvador
Trump’s government decided to give El Salvador $66 million to prepare for the possible peak of contagion and other concerns.
The current administration stated that this aid is for El Salvador to reintegrate deportees to their society and to protect the most vulnerable population.
The US also mentioned that these funds need to be used to boost El Salvador’s economy and thus be able to avoid illegal immigration at all costs, or at least reduce it.
It is important to emphasize that the current government reminded El Salvador about the Asylum Cooperation Agreement (ACA) and recommended to use this donation to continue deportations.
This gesture is also a way to recognize El Salvador’s effort during the COVID-19 pandemic. The US also recognized that illegal immigration has decreased almost 71% thanks to the global health crisis.
The decision to help neighboring countries shows the degree of impact of the virus. Trump’s government is making an immense effort to repair the damage of the pandemic crisis.
What the US did by donating that monetary aid to El Salvador is an important step in resolving the crisis. Actually, the latest reports show that international cooperation can mitigate the socio-economic impact of the virus.
