The US is Losing International Talent
Congress has not passed immigration reform in decades
President Joe Biden, from day one in office, has been promoting comprehensive immigration overhaul in Congress, which, if passed, would substantially transform the US’ approach to immigration, an extremely important step if the country is to maintain its status as the world’s largest economy.
This is because, in an increasingly globalized world, immigration levels have increased substantially in most countries, which stimulates the workforce, creates jobs for local populations, boosts the economy and strengthens a nation’s social fabric.
In the case of the US, a country that has always been the destination of millions of foreigners from all over the world, immigration represents a fundamental pillar for its economy and, in fact, considering that the birth rate and population growth declined considerably during the last decade, as revealed by the 2020 National Census, the best alternative to keep the economy afloat for generations to come is to welcome immigrant communities.
However, despite the benefits that come with immigration, certain political ideals within the US have prevented Congress from passing comprehensive immigration reform since the 1980s. In other words, because Congress has not passed comprehensive immigration legislation in recent decades, the local immigration system is not entirely aligned with global needs, that is, it is outdated.

Canada is gaining international competitiveness over the US
On Tuesday, July 13, 2021, during a hearing, Zoe Lofgren, chair of the House Immigration and Citizenship Subcommittee, openly stated that the US is losing international talent to countries like Canada due to its inflexibility when it comes to local immigration policies and the fact that Congress has not passed comprehensive immigration reform in decades.
Lofgren argued that, “If we want to compete in an increasingly global and technology‑driven marketplace, we have to do what we’ve failed to do for the past 30 years, and that’s reform the immigration system so that it is responsive to the changing needs of our country.”
It is important to mention that one of the most essential aspects of immigration reform does not necessarily have to do with immigration in general, but specifically with highly skilled foreign workers in fields such as science and technology, as well as researchers, international students and workers in other areas such as agriculture and the US food supply chain, who are also important.
However, even though the country has the resources to welcome these bright minds from abroad, many international workers are choosing Canada over the US thanks to its flexible policies and the simplicity of its immigration process.
This fact, in the medium to long term, could be extremely negative and detrimental to the US, especially because several sectors of the local market are already experiencing a devastating qualified workforce shortage, which will not be addressed without the help of foreign workers.
