The US to Help Guatemala to Enforce Immigration Law at the Borders

The US will train Guatemalan personnel to protect the borders

Strategy to curb massive irregular migration from Central America

The Biden administration faces a gigantic crossroads related to the immigration system. This is mainly due to the fact that the surge of illegal border crossings is unleashing colossal social controversy, which, at the same time, puts its immigration proposals at risk.

In fact, the Biden administration’s goal is to restructure the entire immigration system in order to implement more humane and just policies, those that meet current international needs related to globalization and the advancement of technology.

However, the substantial increase in apprehensions at the borders is undoubtedly delaying Biden’s plans and there is growing debate within Congress, which also lengthens the process to promote comprehensive immigration reform.

Therefore, Vice President Kamala Harris is the person appointed by President Biden to handle the current border situation and address the root causes of mass irregular migration, which are not directly related to the US immigration policies, but rather have to do with precarious circumstances in Central America. With this, we refer to situations such as violence, war, the unemployment rate, the lack of resources in the midst of the health crisis, famine, corruption, the crime rate, inter alia.

Currently, Vice President Harris is carrying out several strategies to create international cooperation agreements and improve conditions in Central American countries, mainly Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala. In fact, Harris recently announced that the US will send a total of $310 million to the Northern Triangle of Central America to reduce irregular migration by addressing the humanitarian crisis and famine.

The US will train Guatemalan personnel to protect the borders

As part of the strategy to reduce the number of border encounters, on Monday, April 26, in a videoconference, Vice President Harris and Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei reached an agreement that the US will send 16 DHS (Department of Homeland Security) officers to Guatemala to train local authorities on how to protect the borders effectively and reduce irregular migration to North America.

Adding to that, within the action plan, the US will help Guatemala to:

  • Build facilities to receive migrants returned from other territories such as the US.
  • Implement a transition process to help deportees re-enter the Guatemalan social fabric without going through traumatic or precarious experiences.

Vice President Harris hopes that this action plan will allow Guatemala to redistribute local resources to offer a better quality of life to its citizens, strengthen the Central American economy and reduce massive irregular migration.
