The USCIS Expedites the Printing of Work Permits
Thousands of immigrants wait for their work documents
In order for foreigners to work in the US, they must hold a legal permit or an Employment Authorization Document (EAD).
With the EAD, foreigners can apply for available job positions and be sure that they will not be penalized for not holding a legal work permit.
The federal entity in charge of reviewing and issuing the EADs is the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), which is the branch of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in charge of the country’s immigration processes.
Naturally, the arrival of the global Coronavirus pandemic in the North American territory contributed for the delay in immigration processes. Mainly because the Trump administration banned the entry of foreigners for more than two months and because the USCIS offices also suspended on site services for a considerable period of time.
Hence, services such as biometric data updates (required to apply for an EAD) and face-to-face hearings were not available to the public during the massive Coronavirus outbreak.

Judge intervened for work permits
The USCIS offices reopened in June 2020, however, a judge had to intervene in early August due to substantial delays in work permits.
Thousands of foreigners had already received approval to obtain their EADs, but they have not been able to work during the current juncture because without the physical document, local companies cannot hire them.
Therefore, they asked a judge to request to the USCIS to print their EADs as soon as possible. In this way, they will be able to work, support their families and help the US overcome the economic crisis caused by the global pandemic.
Therefore, the judge ruled in favor of foreigners and ordered the USCIS to print the work permits within seven days.

The USCIS finally issues work permits
Despite substantial delays, the USCIS announced that the printing of the EADs is taking place as soon as possible.
The immigration agency explained that the contract with a third party company, responsible for printing the work permits, expired in June and was not renewed. Therefore, the USCIS did not have the resources to print them.
On top of that, the USCIS planned to hire more employees to speed up the printing of the EADs. However, this was not possible due to its downturn in revenue.
