Thousands of Asylum Seekers Wait for Biden’s Plan to Start
Trump’s restrictions banned asylum seekers from entering the US
According to former President Donald Trump’s opinion, immigrant communities often take advantage of the immigration system to seek international protection through humanitarian programs such as political asylum using “false stories and lies.”
The former president and his team stated on several occasions that alternatives for immigrants to apply for political asylum in the US were quite broad, affecting the American population, saturating the economic system and reducing opportunities for local workers.
Adding to that, the Trump administration believed that most political asylum applications were based on fake stories and that federal entities in charge of processing immigration cases needed to implement a more effective scrutiny system and increase eligibility requirements.
In fact, the Trump administration implemented the MPP (Migrant Protection Protocols) policy, or “Remain in Mexico,” which states that asylum seekers must remain in Mexico while they receive a response to their immigration applications.
When implementing this policy, the Trump administration argued that most asylum applications are rejected, but that asylum seekers took advantage of the opportunity to work in the US by applying for an EAD (Employment Authorization Document), which, in its opinion, affects the local economic system.

The Biden administration unveils asylee resettlement plan
The Biden administration disagrees with former President Trump’s stance when it comes to the immigration sector. President Joe Biden, who took office almost a month ago, states that immigration is extremely positive and beneficial for the US and the most important sectors of the local market.
Thus, the Biden administration has issued multiple Executive Orders and Memoranda to remove Trump’s restrictive immigration policies.
Regarding the MPP policy, the Biden administration:
- Suspended new enrollment in this program at the end of January.
- In mid-February, it presented a resettlement project to allow the entry of thousands of asylum seekers who currently reside in Mexico under this policy, amid the health emergency caused by the global Coronavirus pandemic.

Thousands of asylum seekers await their chance to enter the US
Thousands of asylum seekers currently living in temporary shelters, rustic camps or foundations belonging to humanitarian organizations, are looking forward to the Biden administration’s plan going into effect on Friday, February 19.
Many of them have also waited in dangerous cities of Mexico for several months or even more than a year due to the massive outbreak of Coronavirus, which forced the Trump administration to close the borders and pause immigration almost completely.
However, it is worth mentioning that the Biden administration also asks immigrant populations not to reach the US borders at this time since the health crisis is still present and border entities will not be able to process their cases until the situation improves within the country.
