TPS Beneficiaries Ask for Help to Remain in the US
Court approves cancellation of TPS
Since President Trump took office in 2017, he has tried to remove some humanitarian programs offered to immigrants currently residing in the US. The Trump administration states that foreigners who cross the borders without legal documentation should not have options to reside in the country because they violated local law.
That is the case of the Temporary Protected Status (TPS), a humanitarian program that protects immigrants from countries experiencing armed conflict, natural disasters and other conditions that could put their lives at risk. Currently, the TPS protects immigrants from 10 countries, chosen by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
The Trump administration recently won the legal battle as the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in favor of canceling the TPS. Thus, the current administration of the US now has the power to remove it from benefits offered to immigrants.
It is important to clarify that many TPS beneficiaries have resided in the country for decades, sometimes for more than 28 years, thanks to this immigration program, and denying them protection would make them face imminent danger in their countries, which is already an unknown place for many of them.

Immigrant rights advocates ask for bill approval
The US House of Representatives passed a bill called the “American Dream and Promise Act of 2019” in June of last year, which states that the DHS and the Department of Justice (DOJ) should cancel deportation proceedings for immigrants who are beneficiaries of programs such as TPS or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), if they meet certain requirements.
In addition to that, the bill proposes to offer the opportunity to request Legal Permanent Residence (LPR) to these immigrant communities.
Dozens of activists, TPS recipients, and immigrant rights advocates held a protest in Las Vegas, calling on Congress to review the bill and support immigrant communities, so they can continue to reside in the US legally.
One of the protesters, who is also a TPS beneficiary, stated: “We, the TPS holders and all the immigrants, are usually people who hold two jobs, pay taxes and we work hard with our own sweat (…) We the immigrants need your help; we need help from everybody in power right now.”
The Trump administration has yet to announce changes for the TPS program and Congress has also yet to respond to the bill.
