TPS Holders Expect Permanent Solution with Biden
TPS for immigrants who need international protection
The US, being a first world country and a world power, has the necessary resources and the possibility to offer humanitarian alternatives to immigrants who need international protection while trying to flee from persecution, danger, violence, war, natural disasters, epidemics and other precarious situations that put their integrity at risk.
The US immigration system has an option called Temporary Protected Status (TPS), which offers protection against deportation to immigrants from several countries that are experiencing ongoing armed conflicts, epidemics, natural disasters, inter alia.
The main difference of this humanitarian program is that not everyone can apply for it, but the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has the responsibility to choose the TPS beneficiary countries. After DHS selects beneficiary territories, citizens of these countries, already residing in the US, can apply for TPS by submitting an application to the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

TPS holders look forward to a fresh start with Biden
Immigrant communities in the US were relieved when the results of the presidential elections came to light. The American population elected the Democratic nominee, Joe Biden, as the nation’s 46th president, who promised to fix, restructure, reform and improve the local immigration system, which, in the opinion of activists and experts, is broken due to policies implemented by the current administration.
It is important to clarify that the Trump administration used all the tools at its disposal to curb illegal immigration and reduce legal immigration, which led to the implementation of hundreds of policies that hinder immigration processes and affect the most vulnerable immigrant communities such as TPS recipients, asylum seekers and refugees.
Thus, because the incoming administration supports immigration and plans to lift Trump’s restrictive policies, TPS holders hope it will also increase legal alternatives for them beyond temporary protection, which leaves them in immigration limbo.
TPS holders share their testimonies
Recently, several TPS holders, who are also activists, have shared their testimonies, stories and opinions regarding the current immigration system and the duty of the incoming government to protect the most vulnerable immigrant communities.
For instance, Dalia Sandoval, from El Salvador, has been protected by TPS for almost two decades, but she still feels that her future in the US is uncertain and that she could be threatened with deportation. She, who is also an immigrant rights advocate, calls on the Biden government to create ways for people like her to obtain legal permanent residence.
In fact, she states: “We help the economy. I have a house and pay taxes, I have had this house for 18 years in Arlington and I am studying to be a teacher. I want to work with children with special needs (…) We need their support for permanent residency. Many Hispanics voted for Biden. We don’t want more lies and promises.”
She, like hundreds of TPS holders, hope that the Biden-Harris government will improve the quality of life for hard-working immigrants who drive the economy, and open a path to citizenship so they don’t have to return to vulnerable environments where their lives could be at risk.
