Trump Administration Plans to Expand Asylum Agreements with Other Countries
Substantial changes in the political asylum process
The US is a first world country that offers multiple benefits for immigrants and vulnerable communities seeking protection through several humanitarian programs.
One of these programs is political asylum, which is an alternative for immigrants who have been victims of persecution, violence, abuse, threats or war in their countries.
Normally, since asylum seekers need international protection, they can apply for multiple social benefits such as Employment Authorization Document (EAD), access the health system, inter alia.
However, since President Donald Trump took office in 2017, the political asylum process and its benefits have changed substantially. For instance, asylum seekers no longer have the possibility to reside in the US while waiting for responses to their applications, but must remain in Mexico under the Migrant Protection Protocol (MPP) policy.
Adding to that, the Trump administration recently increased requirements that asylum seekers must meet in order to obtain this humanitarian benefit.

The Trump administration proposes expanding political asylum agreements
Since one of the purposes of the current administration is to reduce the number of immigrants entering the country, including asylum seekers and refugees, it has proposed to implement agreements with third countries so that immigrants can request international protection there before arriving to the US.
In fact, the Trump administration already has an agreement with Guatemala, which is part of the so-called “Asylum Cooperation Agreements”, that forces immigrants from Honduras and El Salvador to request political asylum in this country before the US.
However, according to an AP News report, if President Trump wins reelection in November, his administration plans to broaden and expand these agreements with other Central American countries to reduce the number of asylum seekers arriving to the North American territory, as well as to curb the “asylum fraud, asylum shopping and asylum abuse on a global scale”, according to Stephen Miller, President Trump’s senior advisor.
Adding to that, Miller assured that if President Trump wins a second term, he will use all the tools at his disposal against the well-known “sanctuary policies or cities”, which prevent law enforcement entities from cooperating with border forces such as Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) or Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
