Trump Could Deport Immigrants Over Vaccination Record – New York Gov.
The Trump administration requests information about vaccination against COVID-19
The Trump administration, through the Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) asked all states for detailed reports of people who receive the vaccine against COVID-19, once it is ready.
According to the Trump government, the data collected will be used merely to keep track of vaccination sessions, as well as to determine if there are people who have adverse, allergic or negative reactions to conduct corresponding analysis.
Adding to that, HHS ensured that these reports will not include personal information such as Social Security Number (SSN) or driver’s license number. Therefore, undocumented immigrants could (until told otherwise) also receive their personal dose against the Coronavirus and will not be carriers of the virus for fear of deportation.

New York Governor accuses the Trump administration of misusing vaccination information
On Monday, November 2, 2020, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo accused the Trump administration of wanting to collect personal data from undocumented immigrants through vaccination records to continue mass deportations.
In fact, according to Governor Cuomo, there is an “ulterior motive to allow that information to be used by federal immigration officials in targeting undocumented people for deportation.” Cuomo says the Trump administration plans to request identification numbers from people who receive the vaccine.
It is important to clarify that New York law allows undocumented immigrants to obtain a driver’s license. Thus, Cuomo fears that the Trump government will take advantage of this information to deport immigrants residing there.
This accusation is primarily due to the fact that in New York State there are multiple “sanctuary cities or jurisdictions”, which refers to places that ban cooperation with border forces such as Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to avoid mass detention and deportation of undocumented immigrants.
The Trump administration has been in a constant battle with sanctuary jurisdictions and has even threatened to cut federal funding if they do not cooperate with border entities, which try to protect the American population from undocumented immigrants with criminal records, as the President states.
The White House responds to the accusations
A White House spokesperson stated, regarding Governor Cuomo’s allegations, that the government does not intend to request personal information from people who receive the vaccine and that this database will only track the efficiency and dose administration.
Adding to that, the White House assures that Cuomo’s accusations had a political connotation and the governor is not thinking about the population and the fight against Coronavirus.
