Trump Implements New Measures for the DACA Program
DACA is on the tightrope again
The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) is a program that protects young immigrants from possible deportation if they meet the eligibility requirements.
Broadly speaking, DACA protects immigrants who came to the US without legal documentation when they were minors.
This program was established in 2012, during Barack Obama’s term. DACA protects young people from deportation for two years, with the possibility of extension, and also allows them to apply for work or study permits.
However, for the past two years, DACA has been on a tightrope on several occasions because the current United States government disagrees with this program.
The controversy around this issue seems endless and even the Supreme Court of Justice recently intervened and ruled in favor of DACA, protecting almost 700,000 young immigrants covered by this program.
Despite the Supreme Court verdict, the Donald Trump government is still continuing its attempt to remove this program from the benefits offered to the young immigrant community currently residing in the US.

Trump announces new measures for the DACA program
On Tuesday, July 28, 2020, the Trump administration announced two changes to be implemented in the DACA program:
- The government will not accept new DACA applications until further notice.
- Immigrants who are currently covered by DACA may continue to renew their permits, but now only for one year. Previously this permit was valid for two years.
The Trump administration presents several arguments explaining the reasons why it is not following the verdict of the US Supreme Court of Justice:
- The official Supreme Court statement only explains that the arguments used by the Trump government to request the removal of DACA are not strong enough to accept them.
Therefore, the government plans to bring the case to the Supreme Court again, but this time presenting stronger and more structured arguments. - The Supreme Court never mentioned the legality of DACA. Therefore, the Trump government wants to expose why this program is illegal and how it affects the country.
- Trump’s administration constantly declares that no immigrant crossing the borders of the US illegally should have the opportunity to reside in the country, even if they are minors.
- Trump’s administration argues that in order to reduce illegal immigration, foreigners who cross borders without legal documentation must receive a lesson from the US.
In this way, immigrants who want to try to enter the country illegally will think twice before doing so due to the possible repercussions.
Therefore, the case will most likely reach the Supreme Court again, and the well-known “Dreamers”, who benefit from this program, are once again worried about the changes implemented by the Trump government.
