Trump Praises Legal Immigration During the RNC
Trump attends Naturalization Ceremony
The Republican National Convention (RNC) is a four-day event dedicated for the presidential nominee of the Republican political party to expose his/her projects and goals to citizens and possibly win the elections.
The next presidential election of the US will be in November 2020, and the RNC is taking place during the week of August 24. The current president, Donald Trump, is seeking re-election and is using the convention to expose his purposes to remain the leader of the nation.
In one of our most recent articles, we talk about a Naturalization Ceremony that President Trump sponsored during the second day of the RNC. This ceremony allows immigrants to become American citizens. Therefore, after the naturalization ceremony, they can apply for social and government benefits, vote in the presidential elections and have the same rights as any other citizen.
The fact that President Trump sponsored a naturalization ceremony sparked a gigantic controversy because one of the pillars of his political campaign has always been to reduce immigration, both legal and illegal.
In fact, many activists state that the Trump administration used the naturalization ceremony as a political strategy to obtain more votes and win reelection, but that it will most likely continue to increase restrictions and requirements for immigrant communities currently residing in the US and for those who wish to come to the country.
President Trump spoke positively about legal immigration
In addition to attending and sponsoring the naturalization ceremony, President Trump gave a speech dedicated to the five immigrants, from different nationalities, who received American citizenship.
President Trump declared: “You followed the rules, you obeyed the laws, you learned our history, embraced our values, and proved yourselves to be men and women of the highest integrity (…) It’s not so easy. You went through a lot. And we appreciate you being here with us today (…) It’s an honor for me to be your president.”
The contradictions of this event
There are multiple reasons why dozens of activists raised their voices against this naturalization ceremony, let’s see some of them:
- The Trump administration has implemented approximately 400 changes in the immigration sector over the past three years. These changes have lengthened the processes, increasing restrictions and regulations for immigrants.
- President Trump has referred, on multiple occasions, to immigration as a negative aspect for the country, arguing that mass immigration affects the economy.
- During the health crisis caused by the global Coronavirus pandemic, the Trump administration has substantially restricted the entry of immigrants to the US.
Thus, activists argue that President Trump plans to win reelection to continue with his “anti-immigration” agenda.
