Trump to Visit the Border Wall Before Leaving Office
The current government’s strategy to curb illegal immigration
In President Donald Trump’s view, illegal immigration is a major problem that requires constant attention from the federal government so that it does not become an unnecessary burden on the local economic system and unleash a social crisis within the US.
In fact, immigration, both legal and illegal, has always been a controversial issue among the American population, mainly because the US is the destination of thousands of foreigners annually, who seek opportunities through humanitarian programs such as political asylum, employment-based visa programs, family immigration options, student immigration, inter alia.
However, the Trump administration has focused heavily, more than other administrations, on reducing illegal immigration. To give a specific example, when President Trump launched his political campaign for the 2016 elections, one of his main proposals was the construction of the border wall that separates the US from Mexico.
According to the Trump administration, the border wall:
- Curbs illegal immigration from Central America.
- Helps border entities such as ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) or CBP (Customs and Border Protection) to fulfill their tasks.
- Forces immigrants to apply for legal permits only at authorized ports of entry.
According to official CBP figures, there are currently 452 miles of border wall, and the Trump administration has already funded about 738 miles, which means that his project is not finished yet. It will be up to the incoming government (Biden-Harris) to decide what will happen to the part of the border wall that has not been built but is already funded.

Trump plans to visit the border wall before Biden takes office
It is well known that the American population elected the Democratic nominee, Joe Biden, as the 46th president of the US, who will take office on January 20, 2021.
Before leaving office, President Donald Trump plans to make a trip to Texas on Tuesday, January 12, 2021, where a large part of the border wall has been built over the past four years.
According to information received directly from the White House, President Trump plans to go to the south of the country to highlight the impact of his administration on the immigration system, the progress of the border wall and the benefits of reducing illegal immigration through strategies such as the border wall.
Conversely, the president-elect does not agree to handle illegal immigration through strict policies like the border wall. Therefore, he plans to stop the construction of the wall without affecting what Trump has already built. The Biden administration states that, to reduce illegal immigration effectively, without putting the well-being and integrity of immigrants at risk, there must be an immigration reform to expand legal alternatives so that foreigners can come to the US without crossing borders unlawfully.
