Trump’s Administration Plans to Change the DACA Program
DACA Program Overview
The Barack Obama administration put considerable effort into improving immigration policies in the US and offering more benefits to the most vulnerable population.
The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) was one of President Obama’s immigration projects.
This program offers protection from deportation to thousands of immigrants who entered the US without legal documentation when they were minors.
This temporary residence permit allows immigrants to have enough time to complete their immigration petitions without being deported as it is valid for two years with the possibility of extension. It also prevents “Unlawful Presence” from being a condition to obtain legal citizenship.

The opinion of Donald Trump’s government regarding DACA
Since President Trump took office in 2017, he has openly expressed dissatisfaction with the DACA program.
For the current administration of the US, no person who crosses the borders illegally should have the opportunity to obtain legal residence or citizenship.
The US Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) temporarily stopped issuing these permits by presidential order.
However, there are still thousands of immigrants protected by DACA and they are still waiting for a final decision regarding this program.
Most of them already have an active immigration case and are waiting for a response to their requests, that means that if the government cancels the program, they could front a deportation case.
The Supreme Court of Justice intervened
The Trump administration has received several lawsuits from immigrant rights advocates seeking protection for the DACA program.
Due to this controversy generated by the sudden changes implemented in the DACA program by President Donald Trump, the US Supreme Court of Justice decided to intervene to make a final decision.
The Supreme Court declared in 2019 that it was going to give a final answer regarding DACA and its future implementation in June 2020.

President Trump wants to change DACA ahead of official Supreme Court response
The US presidential elections are taking place very soon and the Trump administration is creating an immigration reform law to present as one of the pillars of his campaign.
However, many critics around the country argue that the wisest course would be to wait for the official response from the Supreme Court before rushing to change DACA policies.
In addition to that, the immigration reform presented by President Trump suggests eradicating DACA gradually and there is still no official order to achieve that goal.
