Trump’s Government Decides to Protect a Group of Immigrant Children
Immigrant minors detained in a Texas hotel
Recently, a shocking news came out regarding the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE) taking immigrant minors to hotels before deporting them.
When unaccompanied immigrant minors attempt to cross the borders without legal documentation and are detained by ICE, this entity must make sure that they remain in the custody of the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
The HHS has an operational division called the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR). This entity is in charge of protecting immigrant minors while they receive a response to their immigration cases.
However, during the health crisis caused by the Coronavirus, ICE is not following the protocol established by law and is keeping immigrant minors in hotels to deport them without giving them the opportunity to file an immigration application.

The Trump administration’s reaction
This news went viral and sparked a huge controversy in the country, to the point that multiple lawsuits have been filed by immigrant rights advocates during the past week.
Several days after this social and political scandal, the current administration of the US, led by President Donald Trump, decided to protect a group of 17 unaccompanied minors from deportation.
The minors are currently held in a Texas hotel and will now be transferred to one of the HHS child protection centers.
They will have the opportunity to have legal representation, file an immigration application, and attend a hearing with a local judge.
In fact, this is the normal process that must be followed with all immigrant minors who cross the country’s borders without legal documentation.
However, due to the global Coronavirus pandemic and the recent decisions of the Trump government on the immigration sector, this process is not currently fully followed.
Hopeful news for immigrant communities
Despite the fact that the US law states that unaccompanied immigrant minors should be under the supervision and custody of the ORR, this is still very encouraging news for immigrant communities after abrupt changes implemented by the Trump government during the global pandemic.
Therefore, we can see how the immigration services are resuming and established protocols are gradually returning to normal.
