Trump’s Government Still Plans to Remove DACA
President Trump loses his battle against DACA
The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) is a program offered to immigrants who entered the US without legal documentation when they were minors.
DACA has been active since 2012, when President Barack Obama created a series of benefits for immigrant communities residing in the United States.
This program offers them:
- Legal residence for two years with the possibility of extension
- Protection against deportation.
- The possibility to obtain a temporary work permit.
- Allows them to obtain a Social Security Number (SSN).
- The possibility of initiating a legal residency process even if they have lived in the US illegally (without documentation) for a period of time.
- It allows them to obtain driving license in some states of the country.
The current administration of the US has always been against DACA. President Trump argues that immigrants who cross the borders illegally should not have an opportunity to obtain legal residence or citizenship in the country.
In fact, President Trump has repeatedly mentioned that the only viable solution for immigrants who cross the country’s borders without legal documentation is deportation.
That is why the current administration asked the Supreme Court of Justice to remove DACA from programs offered to immigrant communities.
The US Supreme Court ruled in favor of the more than 700,000 immigrants protected by DACA and declared that the requests from Trump’s government are insufficiently founded to consider canceling the program.

The Trump administration plans to continue the process to cancel DACA
On Sunday, June 21, 2020, one of the officials from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated that Trump’s administration is still continuing with the plan to remove DACA from immigrant programs.
In fact, President Trump stated that he disagrees with the final decision of the Supreme Court and that he plans to cancel DACA in six months.
DHS argues that the Supreme Court of Justice defended DACA because it did not agree with the arguments presented by the government.
The DHS official statement declares that: “At no point in that decision did they say that the program was lawful. They simply didn’t like the rationale and the procedures that we used”.
Thus, the Trump administration plans to resubmit the request using different arguments and hopes to win the case with help from the US Supreme Court.
Why does the president not accept the final verdict?
Since President Trump took office in 2017, one of his main focuses has been to decrease the number of immigrants entering the US.
The current administration argues that immigration is a burden on the country’s economy and uses primary resources that should be available only for American families.
In addition to that, the current government of the US does not want to grant any kind of relief or opportunity to immigrants who have crossed the borders illegally.
