Trump’s Latest Movement on Student Visas
Foreign students may have to leave the United States
In one of our most recent articles, we talked about President Trump’s latest official statement regarding immigration and visas in the US.
The Trump administration recently stated, through the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE), that international students may need to leave the US soon.
The scenarios that apply for this measure are:
- Due to the current health crisis, most universities are considering the idea of using digital tools to continue classes for the rest of the year.
If international students are attending an university that currently offers only virtual classes, they cannot stay in the US. If they stay in the country, they will face a deportation process. - If international students are part of a local university that currently offers only virtual classes, they have the option to change institutions to one that offers face-to-face classes as well, at least a certain amount per week.
This measure has been a major topic around the world for the past few days as it affects several nations that greatly benefit from non-immigrant student visas offered by the US Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS).
The two countries most affected by this measure are China and India, since the majority of foreign students currently residing in the US on student visas come from these two nations.
Student visas will not be issued by the USCIS, at least temporarily
Aside from the fact that international students may have to leave the US, President Trump also clarified that student visa applications are temporarily suspended to prevent another wave of Coronavirus outbreak in the country.
This means that no foreign student is allowed to enter the country temporarily due to the health crisis caused by the global pandemic.
The possible repercussions
It is important to clarify that international students do not only bring innovation and competent skills to the country, but also contribute considerably to the economic sector.
Traveling to the US to study is not always affordable for all people since the investment is quite high and this has helped the country’s education sector to be competent compared to the rest of the world and to have economic funds to be able to invest in infrastructure and research.
