Uncertain Future for TPS Beneficiaries
TPS is on the tightrope
According to the official website of the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USICS), immigrants from countries experiencing armed conflict, natural disasters, civil war, epidemics and other adverse circumstances, have the possibility of ask for international protection through a humanitarian program called Temporary Protected Status (TPS).
Normally, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is responsible for determining which are the beneficiary countries of TPS and how long the permit will last. Currently, there are 10 countries on the TPS list.
It is important to understand that the current administration of the US, with President Donald Trump leading, has a negative perception regarding humanitarian programs. The Trump government argues that the country should change some of the current benefits and replace them with a merit-based immigration system.
That is why his government has tried to remove programs like TPS and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) on multiple occasions, as well as substantially reduce the number of refugees and asylum seekers allowed annually in the US, denying them the opportunity to seek international protection.
The controversy surrounding TPS was so great that it reached the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, which ruled in favor of the Trump administration and, in mid-September, allowed the cancellation of TPS.
However, the current administration has not presented its decision to the public and several TPS beneficiary countries have protection against deportation until January 2021.

TPS recipients are in limbo
According to official figures, there are approximately 411,000 immigrants protected by TPS, who have resided in the country for a considerable period of time, some of them for more than 20 years, which makes their return to an almost unknown country dangerous.
They built a life in the US, have families, and contribute greatly to local socioeconomic development through their jobs and taxes.
Testimonials from hundreds of TPS beneficiaries show that anguish and hopelessness is present during these times of crisis because they do not know what the Trump administration’s decision will be now that it has the power to remove this immigration benefit and, in their opinion, it seems that the government is waiting until last minute to present its decision, without giving them time or possibility to appeal their cases and choose another immigration process.
For instance, in Florida there are more than 56,000 TPS holders. They do not know what their fate will be if they face deportation or if the Trump administration removes this humanitarian program that has allowed them to live in harmony and build a promising future for their beloved ones.
