Universities Call for Protection for Dreamers as Biden Tries to Save DACA
Dreamers and their uncertain future in the US
The term Dreamers refers to young immigrants who came to the US without legal documentation when they were minors and who, in their vast majority, have resided in the country for as long as they can remember and are now part of the American socioeconomic fabric.
Thousands of Dreamers have found temporary amnesty from deportation thanks to a program implemented by the Obama administration in 2012, DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals), which offers protection to eligible Dreamers for two years with the possibility of extension.
However, this immigration benefit, which is the only alternative available specifically for Dreamers, went through multiple legal processes under the Trump administration and even now under the Biden administration.
This is because former President Trump, along with his team, never agreed to offer legal alternatives to immigrants who violated local laws by crossing the borders without documentation, regardless of whether they are minors or not.
As a result, hundreds of thousands of Dreamers are currently facing gigantic uncertainty as they do not know for sure what is going to happen to their future in the US.

The battle over DACA continues
In June 2020 when the US Supreme Court ruled in favor of DACA and rejected Trump’s request to remove it from programs available to immigrant communities, it appeared that this legal battle was over.
However, through another legal process, a Texas judge ordered the Biden administration to suspend new DACA applications in mid-July 2021, stating that Obama did not follow the regular process and, therefore, it is an illegitimate program.
In an attempt to protect DACA, in September 2021, the Biden administration issued a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking, which seeks to reimplement or recreate DACA following the judge’s comments and regular protocols.

Universities call for permanent protection for Dreamers
Several universities support Biden’s DHS (Department of Homeland Security) intention to recreate DACA, but also state that it is still a temporary protection for Dreamers and that the most important thing is to promote the path to citizenship.
It is worth clarifying that Dreamers are not just part of an immigrant community, they are also students, workers, entrepreneurs and business people in all kinds of sectors and, therefore, a pillar for the national economy.
