Universities Fear That America’s Image Will Deteriorate
Government restrictions could harm the education sector
Considering the arrival of the Coronavirus pandemic in the US, President Trump decided to implement several emergency measures in the immigration sector that have considerably modified some of the processes.
Several of these measures have been announced over the past two months and have generated much controversy among immigrant communities and immigrant rights advocates around the country.
For instance, the Trump administration recently implemented a series of restrictions for foreign students. However, after the country’s most renowned universities and more than 200 colleges started legal proceedings, the current administration backed down on these measures.
Now, multiple well-known universities argue that the aftermath of abrupt changes in immigration policy could alter the global image of the US as a student destination.
The recent controversy
The Trump administration recently announced that foreign students should leave the US if they did not have at least a portion of face-to-face classes during the fall. Otherwise, if they did not leave on their own, they could face deportation proceedings.
Due to this sudden restriction, several universities filed lawsuits, presenting several arguments.
Let’s see some of them:
- International students are a key part for the economy of the education sector. Their annual investment greatly helps universities to have enough funds to invest in infrastructure, quality, and research.
- They, apart from investing economically, bring innovation, multiculturalism, talent, inspiration and international competitiveness.
- Because the US is still the main epicenter of the global Coronavirus pandemic, forcing students and teachers to attend face-to-face classes (even if it is only a portion), is putting the health of innocent people at risk.
This, the universities did not want to allow this restriction to take place because it would greatly affect the education sector.
Other than that, the Trump administration argued that this restriction was going to boost the economy. However, in the opinion of the universities, deporting foreign students only increased the economic crisis.
The aftermath of this restriction
Over the past few days, several recognized universities have expressed concern about the aftermath of these restrictions imposed by the Trump government (even if they were not carried out) and how they could affect the education sector in the US.
For example, the Chancellor of the University of California openly declares: “Higher education in the United States is still seen as the gold standard around the globe, but access to it comes with all kinds of risks (…) There’s a growing sense that we’re just not a welcoming place”.
If the Trump administration continues to change immigration policies abruptly and suddenly, as it has for the past two months, several universities assure that it will only prevent thousands of international students from considering the US as their first choice for higher education.
This could greatly affect the education sector that benefits from the talent of international students. In addition to that, foreign economic investment is essential during these times of crisis.
