USCIS Expands Interviews for Relatives of Refugees or Asylees
Asylees or refugees can also help family members
Immigrants can apply for international protection in the US through humanitarian programs such as political asylum or refuge. They must demonstrate that they have been, or could be, victims of persecution due to their religion, political opinion, sexual orientation, race, nationality, inter alia.
When immigrants receive this immigration status they become asylees or refugees, and when they are already in the US, they can apply for asylum or refuge for their spouses or children, subject to a series of mandatory requirements.
Normally, to apply for asylee or refugee status for their family members, they must fill out Form I-730 (Petition for Relative Refugee / Asylee) and the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is in charge of receiving and reviewing this application to verify the credibility of the petition and to ensure that information of both, the petitioner and the beneficiary, is real and verifiable.
In this way, through interviews, the USCIS verifies that applicants are indeed family members and that they meet mandatory requirements to obtain asylum or refugee immigration status.

The USCIS will increase the number of interviews for Forms I-730
On November 18, 2020, the USCIS issued a Policy Memorandum called “Expanding Interviews to Refugee/Asylee Relative Petitions,” which states that the federal entity will increase availability of face-to-face appointments for asylees and refugees requesting legal immigration status for their relatives.
Broadly speaking, the USCIS will assign additional in-person interviews to prevent fraud in the applications. In fact, the USCIS states: “These additional interviews will provide an opportunity to evaluate a petitioner’s credibility, supporting our mission to detect and prevent fraud and risks of harm to the United States and ensure the integrity of the immigration system.”
Initially, during the first phase of the interviews, the USCIS will assign face-to-face appointments for asylees or refugees and their beneficiary family members who are already in the US. In this way, the USCIS can verify family ties’ authenticity.
