The USCIS Creates Partnership with Social Security Administration

In an effort to streamline existing processes and reduce the alarming backlog of immigration cases across the country, the USCIS (US Citizenship and Immigration Services) announced a new partnership with the Social Security Administration effective August 9, 2021.

What is the basis for this new strategy?

Previously, foreign nationals interested in obtaining lawful permanent residence had to submit their adjustment of status application to the USCIS and then apply for an SSN (Social Security Number) at the Social Security Administration, which undoubtedly lengthened the process and waiting times for other applicants.

Therefore, under the new partnership, the USCIS will also process SSN applications along with applications for lawful permanent residence, which will simplify the process and reduce bureaucratic hurdles. Adding to that, apart from the SSN, applicants can also request a replacement card thanks to the partnership between the USCIS and the Social Security Administration, as long as the application is also related to adjustment of status.

According to the current USCIS Director Ur Jaddou, “This expansion of our partnership with the Social Security Administration illustrates our commitment to operating our nation’s immigration system more efficiently to save applicants time (…) Eliminating unnecessary bureaucracy and optimizing collaboration across public-serving agencies is a key priority for this agency and the Biden-Harris administration.”
