UTAH protects immigrants during health crisis
Immigrant benefits threatened by Trump’s government
Since President Trump took office in 2017, he has used every possible tool to stop immigration programs or social benefits for foreigners.
Unlike President Barack Obama, who encouraged aid to immigrants and actually, that was one of the main pillars of his campaign.
Therefore, many immigrant protection programs like DACA or TPS were created during his tenure.
These immigrant benefit programs have been repeatedly threatened by the current administration, which suggests reducing immigration as a method of socioeconomic development.
The current health crisis and Trump’s immigration policies
Since the Coronavirus arrived in the US, President Trump abruptly changed immigration policies.
Some of the changes implemented during the health crisis are:
- The borders are currently closed, denying the entry of immigrants seeking asylum or refuge.
Trump’s government mentions that this measure protects the health of ICE employees and immigrants held in detention centers around the country. - The government decided to ban the delivery of “stimulus checks” to undocumented immigrants who do not have a residence or work permit.
The president ensures that social benefits should be granted only to legal citizens or residence permits’ holders. - If a US citizen is married to an immigrant without a Social Security Number (SSN), they are not entitled to receive monetary aid from the government during the Coronavirus crisis.
- No immigrant can apply for permanent residence or a Green Card for a period of 60 days until the contagion peak decreases in the country.
- If immigrants try to reach the borders, deportations can be issued almost immediately and they are normally taken to Central American countries.
Despite government attempts to stop immigration at all costs, some states decided to help the most vulnerable immigrant communities during the Coronavirus outbreak.
UTAH’s support for immigrants
UTAH decided to help immigrants during the current economic situation in the US.
Therefore, immigrants who are part of the following programs can apply to the economic unemployment benefit in Utah:
- Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA).
- Temporary Protected Status (TPS).
- Any foreigner with a work permit and who is currently unemployed.
