Vice President Harris Faces an Unprecedented Challenge
Vice President Harris in charge of handling the current border situation
Periodically, the US faces a surge of illegal border crossings, regardless of ideals of the country’s administration or strict border policies. Since early 2021, border forces such as CBP (Customs and Border Protection) have reported a growing number of undocumented immigrants apprehended in border territory, mainly after Democratic President Joe Biden took office on January 20.
Unsurprisingly, because the Biden administration plans to expand certain immigration programs to attract talent from abroad and openly states that immigration is an advantage for the country, several opposition groups entirely blame the president and his team for increasing and encouraging massive irregular migration. However, it is worth mentioning that, throughout history, there have always been many other influencing factors that force thousands of people to leave their countries and try to come to North America such as corruption, violence, famine, natural disasters, lack of resources, lack of employment, social insecurity, inter alia.
Nevertheless, even though the surge of illegal crossings is not entirely its fault, the Biden administration’s immigration plans are behind schedule and it is trying to manage the border situation as effectively as possible. In fact, President Biden ordered Vice President Kamala Harris to be in charge of the border, find the root causes of mass irregular migration, and work together with neighboring nations to decrease the number of immigrants apprehended at the borders as soon as possible, without violating the human rights of vulnerable communities or putting the safety of the American population at risk.

What is the best way to address the border situation?
Vice President Harris is facing an unprecedented challenge, not only because the number of border encounters in the past two months (March and April) has been the highest in 15 and 20 years respectively, but because it is not simply a matter of implementing strict rules and possibly affecting vulnerable populations.
The Biden administration plans to address the border situation in a systematic way to understand the root causes of irregular migration and improve certain conditions so that Central American citizens do not have to flee their countries. In this way, the US would not have to spend indispensable resources on the detention and deportation system, as well as on disproportionate surveillance at the borders, but could help communities in need of international assistance in their own environments.
In fact, according to a recent report by The Washington Post, certain Republicans who do not support Biden’s immigration proposals applaud and praise strict border policies implemented by former President Trump, often without considering the humanitarian repercussions they generated and how they created temporary, non-lasting solutions and, therefore, not necessarily effective.
Now, Vice President Harris must take into account many factors to address this situation assertively. In other words, Harris and her team must remember that there are unaccompanied immigrant minors involved, families fleeing dangerous situations such as persecution, and the fact that the US is still recovering from the economic crisis brought by the global Coronavirus pandemic.
