Voters from Different Political Parties Support Path to Citizenship
What does the American population really think about immigration reform?
It is quite evident that there is a gigantic political debate related to the immigration sector, more specifically to Biden’s comprehensive reform, which would open a path to legalization for millions of undocumented immigrants in the US.
Naturally, there is a part of the population that does not support this proposal, which states that offering a path to citizenship to foreigners who violated local immigration law would only encourage and increase irregular migration levels.
At the same time, immigrant rights advocates and humanitarian organizations strongly support Biden’s path to citizenship.
However, amidst so much controversy in the media, it can sometimes be confusing to know what the American population really thinks about comprehensive immigration reform in general. In that case, the most appropriate option is to look for reliable sources such as national polls or extensive research.

American citizens support immigration reform
According to a series of polls conducted nationwide since the beginning of the year, a high percentage of the American population supports comprehensive immigration reform, especially when it comes to legalizing essential foreign workers or people who have lived in the US for a considerable period of time.

Battleground states also support the path to citizenship
Aside from national polls that reveal support among the American population for immigration reform, there have also been several polls conducted in battleground states that show voter support for a path to citizenship.
It is important to explain that battleground states are those that usually have a similar number of Republican and Democratic voters and, therefore, the outcome of their elections is often uncertain due to partisan ties.
Back to the subject of polls:
- A poll conducted in 11 battleground states and 70 competitive House districts in September reveals that 3 out of 4 voters support a path to citizenship for essential foreign workers.
- A poll also conducted in September in 8 battleground states reveals that 66% of voters support Biden’s path to citizenship.
- In this poll, 50% of Republican voters support legalization for immigrants who came to the US as children, TPS (Temporary Protected Status) beneficiaries, farmworkers and other essential workers. This is a fairly high figure among Republican voters compared to other recent polls.
