VP Harris Faces Criticism for Message to Central American Migrants
What is Vice President Harris’s message to Central American migrants?
Before going into detail about Vice President Kamala Harris’s message for undocumented migrants from Central America, it is important to clarify that:
- Over the past four months, especially after President Joe Biden took office in late January, the US has experienced the highest surge of illegal border crossings in 20 years, which undoubtedly sparks a gigantic social controversy and generates uncertainty among the local population about whether Biden’s immigration policies, ideals and proposals will be effective or not.
- President Biden, in an attempt to control the current border situation and reduce irregular immigration levels from Central America, ordered Vice President Kamala Harris to be in charge of the influx of undocumented immigrants in border territory and to effectively address the root causes of mass migration to create lasting solutions.
Following President Biden’s order and as part of her strategy, VP Harris recently traveled to Mexico and Guatemala, where she discussed with local leaders about international cooperation agreements to curb irregular migration, boost the local economy and offer a better quality of life to Central American citizens.
Adding to that, in Guatemala, Harris sent a very clear and specific message to people who are planning to come to North American territory without legal documentation and that is “do not come”. Certainly, VPOTUS (Vice President of the United States) explained that border authorities will not tolerate irregular migration and that, to enter the country, all foreigners without exception must follow legal guidelines established by the US’ immigration system.

VP Harris receives countless criticism for her message to Central American migrants
One of the most popular and well-known qualities of the current administration is its rather welcoming stance on immigration and how President Biden plans to reform the entire immigration system and improve alternatives for foreign populations in general.
Therefore, on the one hand, after giving her message in Guatemala, VP Harris has received countless criticism from activist groups, humanitarian organizations, immigrant communities and immigrant rights advocates, who state that her message goes against what President Biden promised during his political campaign.
On the other hand, several Republican members also state that Harris’s message is not yet powerful enough to create any kind of progress regarding the current border situation and that she should create more strategies to improve conditions in border territory before sending a message to people who have not yet reached the US.
However, it is worth mentioning that Harris is fully aware that she faces an unprecedented challenge and that the task given by President Biden is an extremely difficult one that could take years to resolve.
