Weather Threatens Temporary Immigrant Shelters
Immigrants under the “Remain in Mexico” policy
The current administration of the US has never agreed with the idea of immigrants remaining in the country while waiting for a response to their immigration requests.
Therefore, President Donald Trump signed an agreement with the government of Mexico, in January 2019, where they declare that political asylum seekers arriving through Mexico must remain in this country until their immigration cases are answered by the US Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS), or until they have a hearing with a local judge.
This immigration policy is commonly known as “Remain in Mexico”, but it is officially named Migrant Protection Protocol (MPP).
Since this policy went into effect, immigrant rights advocacy organizations, surrounding communities, and immigrant groups have built temporary shelters near the US-Mexico borders so that asylum seekers have a place to live while their immigration cases are resolved.

Asylum seekers in the midst of the current health crisis
These temporary shelters and foundations that constantly receive asylum seekers are facing a gigantic risk for multiple reasons.
Let’s see some of them:
- These shelters do not have enough space for social distancing, which increases the risk of a massive outbreak of Coronavirus .
Nowadays, since the health crisis delayed immigration services in the US, there are even more asylum seekers in Mexico, waiting for their opportunity to file an immigration application. - They do not always have food or water supplies and live on donations from immigrant rights advocates or humanitarian organizations.
- Medical personnel are not constantly available to assist asylum seekers in the event of a massive health emergency.
- Mexico is currently going through the peak of Coronavirus contagion in its territory, which worsens the situation not only for asylum seekers, but for the local population, the health system, the economic system and the government.
In addition to that, the southern US is going through a storm and hurricane season, which increases the risk for several immigrant shelters.
The weather threatens the well-being of asylum seekers
Storm Hanna generated a rainy season near a temporary shelter that houses approximately 1000 immigrants.
The surrounding river began to overflow and threatens to evict hundreds of asylum seekers who patiently wait for the opportunity to have a hearing with a local judge.
This increases the risk they are currently facing and it is essential for border authorities, both in the US and in Mexico, to take the necessary measures to protect the lives of asylum seekers under the MPP policy.
