What do Battleground States Think about Immigration?
Survey Reveals Battleground States’ Views on Immigration
Between June 1 and 3, 2021, On Message Inc. conducted a survey for the NRSC (National Republican Senatorial Committee) and the RGA (Republican Governors’ Association), which analyzes the opinion of about 1,200 voters in 26 Senate and Government battleground states.
When we use the term battleground states, we are referring to certain states where the number of Republican and Democratic voters is quite similar, which means they do not always have a definitive and predictable political party in elections of any kind, whether national or local.
Returning to the survey’s subject, On Message Inc. also included independent voters, who do not necessarily follow the ideals of any specific political party and who are also an important part of battleground states.
Speaking specifically about immigration, a controversial issue throughout history and even more so now that the country is facing a rather difficult border situation, the survey findings reveal that the Democratic party will most likely face several challenges in the midterm congressional elections, which will take place in November 2022, two years after the lastest presidential election.
During these elections, the local population will choose who will fill all seats in the US House of Representatives (435) and 34 out of 100 seats in the Senate.
Let’s take a look at some of the survey’s most important findings regarding immigration:
Is the Biden administration to blame for the border situation?
Overall, 56% of respondents (49% strongly agree and 7% somewhat agree) think President Joe Biden is to blame for the surge in illegal border crossings because his administration has removed multiple “tough Trump policies” during the first half of 2021. In contrast, 40% of respondents (30% strongly disagree and 10% somewhat disagree) disagree with this premise.
It is important to clarify that 93% and 60% of respondents who agree with this premise are Republicans and Independents respectively. At the same time, 78% and 36% of voters who disagree with this premise are Democrats and Independents respectively.
Has Vice President Harris been effective with respect to the border situation?
President Biden recently ordered Vice President Kamala Harris to be in charge of the border situation, that is, the surge of illegal crossings and irregular migration in general. Regarding Harris’ effectiveness in this gigantic task, 31% of respondents think Harris has been effective when it comes to the border situation (9% very effective and 22% somewhat effective). In contrast, 58% of respondents think Harris has not been effective (51% not effective at all and 7% somewhat ineffective).
How might the border situation impact the 2022 midterm elections?
The survey includes a question that connects the surge in illegal border crossings to Democratic candidates for the 2022 Congressional elections. Overall, 53% of respondents (48% much less likely and 5% somewhat less likely) state that they are less likely to vote for Democratic nominees in the 2022 elections because of the current border situation.
At this point it is important to explain that this survey was conducted by Republican organizations and evidently has a focus on ideals of this specific political party, including views regarding immigration.
