What Happened to Trump’s Immigration Reform?
Trump’s immigration reform
After implementing multiple changes in the immigration sector, mainly during the massive outbreak of Coronavirus, and with the elections approaching, the Trump administration declared in early July, 2020, that it planned to propose a new immigration bill.
This news came to light after the US Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), an immigration program that has been embroiled in a gigantic social controversy over the past three years.
Broadly speaking, DACA offers protection from deportation to immigrants who came to the US without legal documentation when they were minors. Since the Trump administration disagrees with this program, the case reached the Supreme Court of Justice and it rejected the government’s request to remove it from benefits offered to immigrants.
When the president announced the new immigration bill, he assured that it would offer a “road to citizenship” for DACA recipients and for other immigrant communities currently residing in the country.

“Merit-based” immigration
Since President Trump took office in 2017, he has mentioned on several occasions that he wants to transform the immigration sector and implement new alternatives to have a “merit-based” immigration system.
With this, the current administration of the US refers to options that may be available to immigrants who comply with local law and contribute to the socioeconomic development of the country.
When the president announced possible immigration reform in July, he assured that the country would know his bill during the next four weeks.

The Trump administration did not mention the immigration bill again
Elections will take place in November, 2020, and the immigration sector is, once again, one of the main pillars of President Trump’s political campaign, who is seeking re-election.
However, the Trump administration has not mentioned the “merit-based” immigration reform since July.
Dozens of activists state that the Trump administration could wait until last minute to implement sudden and abrupt changes, as it has done repeatedly in recent years.
However, it is also possible that President Trump will present the immigration bill before the elections and use this proposal as a key piece for his next term, if he wins.
