White House States it is Working with a Broken Immigration System
Controversy regarding unaccompanied immigrant minors
Currently, the US’ border entities are reporting a fairly high number of immigrant minors entering the country unaccompanied, which has drawn the attention of the local population in recent weeks, especially since the country recently changed administrations and the last two presidents have taken a diametrically opposite stance when it comes to immigration.
In fact, the current controversy lies primarily in the fact that the Biden administration is not deporting unaccompanied minors, unlike the Trump administration. Thus, the gaps in the local immigration system and refugee resettlement programs are more stark than before.
However, the reality is that, since the beginning of the 21st century, at different times and under different administrations, the US has witnessed waves of unaccompanied minors who try to cross borders without legal documentation to request political asylum and flee extremely dangerous situations.
Now that there is a substantial increase in illegal border crossings, opposition groups seize the opportunity to blame President Joe Biden for implementing overly welcoming policies and incentivizing and increasing irregular immigration, even if that is not entirely the case.

Press Secretary comments on the current immigration system
On Monday, March 29, 2021, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki commented on the situation with immigrant minors at the borders and current conditions of the local immigration system.
Psaki stated that when President Biden took office in late January 2021, his administration encountered a broken immigration system and a nearly non-existent refugee resettlement system. As a result, since the Biden administration does not support the idea of expelling unaccompanied minors to risky environments, it is trying to use all the tools at its disposal to improve conditions for these children and offer them the opportunity to build a promising future.
In fact, Psaki openly stated, “We are also in a circumstance where we are digging out of a broken system over the past four years — not just the inhumane policies, but the fact that there were never efforts put in place to look for and seek shelters where these children could be safely and humanely housed.”
